Department of Justice Retains Crowsey For Spatial Evidence Help

The Department of Justice and the US Geological Survey's EDC (EROS, Earth Resources Observation & Science Data Center) retained Rick C. Crowsey to help respond to USGS's move to provide only electronic copies of aerial photographs and satellite images.

Previously EDC provided prints of aerial photographs and satellite imagery in sizes ranging from 9x9 to 36x36 inches. The Department of Justice uses thousands of aerial photographs per year provided by EDC. The transition to electronic delivery only caused the Department of Justice to team up the EDC in funding a study to outline evidentiary guidelines that are hoped to be accepted across the nation for dealing with electronically formatted aerial photographs, satellite imagery and geographic information systems at trial.

In addition to Rick, the study team includes Joanne Gabrynowicz (director of the National Remote Sensing and Space Law Center) and Ron Rychlak (author of Real and Demonstrative Evidence: Applications and Theory). A paper documenting the analysis and the guidelines will be available in the second quarter of 2006. Email Crowsey if you'd like a copy.
